Qatar Airways boss accuses Delta of flying 'crap' planes

The chief of Qatar Airways on Monday denied his company receives subsidies and accused rivals Delta Air Lines of flying "crap" older planes, escalating hostilities between Gulf and American carriers.

Speaking at an arts conference in Doha, Akbar al-Baker said any money his airline receives from the state is in the form of "legitimate" equity and added his company's fleet of aircraft were much cleaner for the environment in comparison to Delta.

"I think Mr Anderson (CEO of Delta, Richard Anderson) doesn't know the difference between equity and subsidy. We never receive any subsidy," Baker said.

He was responding to claims made earlier this month by three US airlines - Delta, American and United - that Qatar, along with carriers in the United Arab Emirates have received US$42 billion in unfair subsidies to wrest business away from competitors.

Baker also accused Delta of flying "crap airplanes that are 35 years old", when talking about pollution by the aviation industry.

In contrast, Baker said Qatar Airways had an "ultra-modern fleet" and was the lowest CO2 contributor in the aviation industry.

Qatar Airways confirms Boeing 777 jets order for US$18.9b

Qatar Airways has finalised a deal to buy 50 new generation 777-9X planes from US aircraft maker Boeing worth $18.9 billion (14 billion euros), the two firms announced on Wednesday.

The order was first announced as a commitment at the Dubai airshow in 2013.

Qatar added on Wednesday that it had agreed a commitment for 50 more of the long-haul fuel-efficient passenger jets, which if exercised would bring the total order value to $37.7 billion at list prices, the airline announced at the Farnborough airshow.

As well as buying up to 100 passenger jets, Qatar said it intended to purchase four 777 freighter planes with an option for four more.

In total, the 777 package is worth about $40 billion to Boeing.

"The Boeing 777 is the backbone of our fleet and is highly amenable to the standards Qatar Airways upholds. We look forward to building on our legacy with the next-generation 777-9X," said the airline's chief executive Akbar Al Baker.

Production of the 777X is set to begin in 2017, with first delivery targeted for 2020. Boeing has so far won 300 orders and commitments from six customers for the 777X.

Qatar Airways 100% state-owned after ex-PM buyout

Qatar Airways has become 100-per cent state-owned after the government bought out private investors, including a former prime minister, its chief executive Akbar Al-Baker said on Monday.

Al-Baker said the acquisition took place last year, shortly after a political shake-up in which Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem was removed from the post of prime minister.

The airline became "100-per cent government-owned at the end of July" when 50 per cent of the company was purchased from the investors including Sheikh Hamad, Al-Baker told reporters in Dubai.

"It was not only Hamad bin Jassem; there were other shareholders," he said at the Arabian Travel Market.

He declined to comment on the motives for the buyout and said he did not know how much the ex-premier, who was relieved of his post when emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani abdicated unexpectedly in favour of his son Sheikh Tamim in June 2013, had received for his stake.

Qatar Airways, he said, would start revealing its results now that the carrier was government owned.

"I don't think the government has any issues for us to start announcing our profits" following the buyout, he said. "Once our last financial year audit is complete, we will say how much money we've made."

Al-Baker did not give details of Qatar Airways' results but said the company was "very efficiently run".

During Sheikh Hamad's reign, Qatar adopted an ambitious foreign policy, until last year's unexpected political shake-up.

Qatar Airways, along with Dubai's Emirates and Abu Dhabi's Etihad, have snatched a sizable share of the long-haul travel sector, turning their home cities into major hub on the routes to Asia and Australasia.

The three are major clients of aircraft manufacturers, with extensive lists of orders from Boeing and Airbus.

Al-Baker said the recent soft opening of Doha's new airport should allow the carrier to expand unhindered, noting "growth was blocked by the capacity of the current airport" in Doha.

He added the much-delayed Hamad International Airport, which opened last week, has an annual capacity to handle 30 million passengers which can be pushed to 45 million passengers if needed.

The new international airport, built at a cost of $15.5 billion (11 billion euros) and named after the former emir, welcomed its first commercial flight on Wednesday.

It had originally been scheduled to open last April, but the date was pushed back after it failed to meet new security standards.

Initially, the facility will only be open to 10 airlines with other carriers, including Qatar Airways, expected to use it from May 27.

Al-Baker also complained of airspace congestion in the Gulf region, saying limiting space for commercial carriers in favour of military use is "not conducive" to the aviation sector.

Major Gulf carriers are trying with governments and regulators "to open more air space to commercial flights," he said.

Airlines dangle sweet deals for off-peak travel

THERE is no better time to take off on a trip.

From less than $300 for short flights on Singapore Airlines (SIA) and other full-service carriers to about $500 for flights to cities in India and China, there are deals galore for budget-conscious travellers considering a vacation.

As the year-end holiday break draws to a close, full-service airlines are dangling sweet deals, with discounts of up to 40 per cent on normal fares, to get people to travel during the slow season from January to March.

Although airlines often offer discounts during off-peak seasons to fill seats, the deals have grown more attractive, said travel agents and aviation analysts.

Fare Deals

Airlines are cutting fares by about 20-40 per cent for off-peak travel.
Air France ⬛ $1,131-$1,360 to cities in Europe
Cathay Pacific ⬛ $281 to Hong Kong
Garuda Indonesia ⬛ $120-$250 to Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya and other Indonesian cities
Jet Airways ⬛ $366 to Chennai
⬛ $520 to Mumbai and Goa
Qatar Airways ⬛ $270 to Bali
⬛ $1,185 to Paris
⬛ $1,850 to Washington
Singapore Airlines ⬛ $238-$278 to Jakarta, Bangkok, Bali and other regional cities
⬛ $698 to Tokyo, Sydney, Melbourne, Seoul
⬛ $1,288 to Europe
Thai Airways ⬛ $428 to Hong Kong, Macau, Yangon
⬛ $1,038 to London, Paris, Milan, other cities in Europe
Source: Airline websites

The main reason is stiff competition not just among full-service airlines but also from budget carriers such as Tigerair and AirAsia.

Travellers keen to bask in the sun and sand in Bali, for example, have many options.

SIA is offering a promotional return fare of $278 while Qatar Airways has a $270 deal. Garuda Indonesia is offering an extra-special $130 fare.

These promotional fares are 20 to 40 per cent lower than the usual rates (see sidebar).

There are good deals for Europe too, travel agents and airlines said.

Thai Airways, for example, is offering starting fares of $1,038 on its website for travel to London, Frankfurt and Paris, among other European cities.

Qatar Airways is doing a special promotion for travellers here to mark a decade of flights to Changi Airport, said Mr Jonathan Zhang, its country manager for Singapore. Discounts are available for selected destinations such as New York and Paris, he said.

Mr Sentot Mujiono, Garuda Indonesia's vice-president for South-east Asia, said: "Usually, travel bookings are slower in the first quarter of the year - many Singaporeans have just returned from their year-end holidays and are easing back into work."

But there are folks who prefer to avoid peak periods, he said, noting that travelling off-peak means cost savings from discounted travel and fewer crowds.

Ms Alicia Seah, marketing communications director at tour agency Dynasty Travel, said: "There is a lot of capacity being added to the market with new flights and destinations, so you do find that airlines are offering good deals to attract travellers."

In addition, airlines are competing with cruise operators, which are bringing new and larger ships to Singapore, she said.

"The big winner here is the traveller," she added.

One traveller who is mulling over the offers is civil servant Amy Tham, 39, who is single.

"I have no kids and the last thing I want is to travel during the school holidays when everything is so expensive and it's crowded everywhere. I think the off-peak deals are great."

Said customer service manager Catherine Kueh, 50, who paid about $1,200 for a week-long package tour to China next month: "It's a good deal - three cities, meals, accommodation."

Boeing, Airbus clinch mega orders at Dubai

Dubai Airshow took off on Sunday with huge aircraft orders and commitments worth around $141.5 billion for Boeing and Airbus from Gulf carriers, with the US manufacturer well in the lead.

The biennial show began brightly for Boeing's 777X, a long-range wide-bodied airliner featuring lower fuel consumption and composite wings.

The new 777 is scheduled to be operational in 2020.

Etihad Airways began the show with an $18.2-billion order for Boeings including 25 777Xs and one 777-200 freighter, Boeing said.

The deal also included an order for 30 787 Dreamliners, making the fast-growing carrier the largest single customer for the medium-body plane.

The Abu Dhabi carrier also announced it was taking an option to buy another 26 aircraft from Boeing.

The total value of the order, including engines and options, amounts to $25.2 billion, according to Etihad.

Emirates Airline followed shortly afterwards by placing orders with both the rival US and European manufacturers, in twin deals valued at $99 billion.

Of this sum, 80 per cent is destined for Boeing's coffers if commitments are confirmed.

The Dubai-based airline ordered 150 777Xs -- 35 777-8Xs and 115 of the 777-9X variant.

Boeing said the Emirates orders were commitments worth $55.6 billion.

The Middle East's largest carrier also boosted the Airbus sales sheet with a firm order for 50 A380 superjumbos worth $20 billion at book value, in the double-decker's first sale this year.

The order cements the status of Emirates as the single largest operator of the long-haul airliner, its chief Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said.

"Emirates has understood from the start the A380's advantages in terms of efficiency, economics and passenger comfort," Fabrice Bregier, Airbus chief and president, told the signing ceremony.

Airbus has been struggling to sell its A380 superjumbo.

Sales of the world's largest commercial aircraft suffered in 2012 after hairline cracks were discovered on A380 wings. Just nine were sold last year, down from an initial order of 30.

Airbus also clinched a $19-billion deal with Etihad, which ordered 87 aircraft including 50 extra-wide-body A350 XWBs.

The order comprises 40 long-haul A350-900s, 10 A350-1000s, one A330-200 freighter, in addition to 26 A321neo and 10 A320neo single-aisle planes, in addition to an option for 30 more aircraft.

Emirates budget sister company also made a commitment to buy up to 100 Boeing single-aisled 737 MAX and 11 Next-Generation Boeing 737-800s, in a deal valued by Boeing at $8.8-billion.

Qatar Airways also chipped in by signing a letter of intent to buy 50 Boeing 777Xs worth $19 billion.

The Doha-based airline said it had also ordered five A330 freighters from Airbus, valued at about $1 billion according to list prices.

The order was accompanied by an option to add eight airliners, which would put the overall price of the deal at $2.8 billion, chief executive Akbar Al-Baker said.

The Qatar Airways chief praised Boeing's 777 long-haul workhorse as he made a surprise appearance at the joint Emirates-Boeing briefing.

The Triple Seven has been a bestseller since it was launched in the 1990s, with 1,473 sold by November 12.

Boeing is fielding the 777X to counter Airbus's long-haul A350-1000.

This aircraft is anticipated to enter service in 2017 with a passenger payload of 350, threatening Boeing's predominance in the long-haul market.

Etihad on Sunday also announced it is acquiring a 33.3 per cent stake in Swiss carrier Darwin Airline which it plans to rebrand as Etihad Regional after the deal receives regulatory approval.

At the 2007 Dubai Airshow, sales of $155 billion were announced, and analysts have projected that orders this time could nudge that record.

In June, the Paris air show at Le Bourget racked up $115 billion in announced sales at catalogue prices.

The 13th Dubai Airshow, which runs until Thursday, is being held for the first time at the just opened Al-Maktoum International, the emirate's second airport and touted to become the world's biggest when complete.

With some 150 aircraft on the tarmac and 1,000 exhibitors, the show cements the Gulf region's hard-won position as the global hub for 21st century travel, spearheaded by booming airlines whose reach encompasses the world.

Qatar Airways first Boeing 787 commercial service takes off to Dubai

Qatar Airways today began commercial services of its brand new Boeing 787 aircraft with Doha – Dubai becoming the Dreamliner’s debut route.

The state-of-the-art aircraft is being deployed on four daily rotations between the two cities marking a new era for Middle East aviation as Qatar Airways is the Boeing 787 launch customer in the region. Flight QR 106 took off from Doha International Airport at 0800 hrs for the one hour journey to Dubai.

Qatar Airways’ newest addition to its fleet heralds the start of an exciting new era for travellers worldwide with unparalled levels of comfort and luxury onboard Boeing’s next generation aircraft.

The 787 services to and from the UAE will target peak travel times in a combination of morning, afternoon and night flights to Dubai.

The new operation comes less than a week after the aircraft’s delivery flight from Seattle to Doha, where it has since spent a few days positioned at Doha International Airport giving staff an opportunity to tour the aircraft before it enters commercial service.

Qatar Airways has orders for 60 Dreamliners. The next four 787s are due to join the fleet by the end of December.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said the maiden commercial route marked yet another exciting achievement for the award-winning airline.

“Today signifies an exciting and hugely anticipated occasion for Qatar Airways, as well as the global aviation industry. It is with enormous pride for my country, our employees and myself that we are embarking on another momentous achievement for our award-winning airline with the introduction of 787 passenger flights. The Dreamliner is yet another first for Qatar Airways, our customers and for the Middle East aviation industry", he said.

“Dubai is one of our most popular routes and we felt it important to give our passengers in and around our neighbouring city an opportunity to experience the comforts of our new plane before it begins long-haul commercial services.

“With this launch we reaffirm our continued commitment to challenge and lead the aviation industry, redefining the passenger experience as we deliver a truly five-star offering to travellers around the world.

“I have no doubt that our passengers – aviation fanatics, seasoned travellers and first time flyers alike will cherish their first time aboard our 787s and look forward to savouring the experience time and time again. The 787 raises the bar for luxury commercial travel and the experience for travellers around the world will never be the same again,” added Al Baker.

Following the 787s welcome into commercial service on the Doha – Dubai route, it will then spread its wings on one of the airline’s five daily flights to London Heathrow. As more 787s join the fleet over the course of the next few weeks, the aircraft will be inducted on other long-haul routes including Zurich, Frankfurt and Delhi.

Qatar Airways has 254 custom-made seats across its 787 Business and Economy Class cabins with specially designed interiors, together with a unique inflight entertainment system offering over 1,000 audio and video programming options. Its Dreamliners are also the world’s first fully connected 787s with wireless facilities for passengers to remain in touch with their friends and loved ones on the ground.

A striking feature of every seat throughout the aircraft is the award-winning touch screen Android system, where passengers are able to navigate through a truly interactive service offering more than 1,000 movie, TV programmes, music and gaming entertainment options in a sophisticated and user friendly way, just like the latest smart phones.

The touch-screen control unit has a unique dual screen interface allowing passengers to play games on their handheld device while enjoying a movie on their personal screen. Passengers are also able to be fully connected through WIFI and GSM telephony, sending both text and MMS messages, with each seat equipped with USB, MP3 and other charger ports, including laptop power outlets.

In addition, dynamic mood lighting and the composite design of the Dreamliner with lighter materials, will ensure passengers are less fatigued and more refreshed as the cabin pressure is 2,000 feet closer to ground level with an air purification system that is cleaner and healthier than many other aircraft.

The 787 Dreamliner is made up of composite materials making it a lighter and more fuel efficient than any comparable aircraft of its size and range. Key features include larger windows, lower cabin pressure at higher altitude ensuring less fatigue, mood lighting throughout the aircraft and more passenger space and comfort.

One of the world’s fastest growing airlines, Qatar Airways has seen rapid growth in just 15 years of operations, currently flying a modern fleet of 112 aircraft to 121 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.

Since the beginning of 2012, Qatar Airways has launched flights to 10 new destinations – Baku (Azerbaijan); Tbilisi (Georgia); Kigali (Rwanda); Zagreb (Croatia), Erbil (Iraq), Baghdad (Iraq), Perth (Australia), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania); Yangon (Myanmar), Maputo (Mozambique), and Belgrade (Serbia).

Over the next few weeks and months, Qatar Airways will launch services to a diverse portfolio of new routes, including Warsaw, Poland (December 5), Gassim, Saudi Arabia (7 January 2013); Najaf, Iraq (January 23); Phnom Penh, Cambodia (February 20); Chicago, USA (April 10); and Salalah, Oman (May 22).

Seats on the 787 Doha – Dubai flights are now bookable online at qatarairways.com, through any Qatar Airways reservation office or local travel agent.

Another airline starts operating the B787 Dreamliner but sadly Qatar Airways isn't going to fly it to Singappore, not yet at least. Currently in Changi Airport, there is only the Japan Airlines operating the B787. I can't wait for the day when Scoot starts receiving its first B787s and I can fly in it as a passenger on BUDGET!! Haha, that is indeed a huge attractive point; budget on premium.
